Fern Information

'Holly Fern'
Cyrtomium falcatum

Cyrtomium falcatum

Holly Fern is semi-hardy and will withstand light frosts. This fern is used primarily as a landscape fern and is grown almost exclusively in one gallon cans for this purpose. It is quite attractive in a garden setting and can be used where the ground is kept just barely moist. It will survive mild drought conditions but will show severe edge burn on the leaves. The mature height is 24" to 30".

Growing Information

Zone: 6-10

Light: Okay in fairly heavy shade, but ‘Holly’ will take morning and late afternoon sun in the garden.

Temperature: Should be grown between 55° and 90° when possible. It will be ok above 100° but will not look as lush. Survives light garden frost.

Feed: Usually not necessary to feed when planted in the landscape but will appreciate any soluble fertilizer at half to quarter strength.

Water: Will not be happy if planted in an area that is soggy.

Potting Mix: Will do well in most garden soils. If the soil is adobe or other poorly draining material, it is best to plant the crown fairly high and mulch with bark.

Pest Control: Pest Control: Really quite pest free!
