Fern Growing Notes

'Boston Compacta'
Nephrolepis exaltata

Nephrolepis exaltata

This is a very carefully selected clone. 'Compacta' from Santa Rosa Tropicals is the classical form that was chosen from hundreds of trials to select the very best compact Boston. It makes a beautifully symmetrical, relatively upright finished plant that will look good in any size pot from 6" through 10".

Culture for best commercial production:

Light: low ok, but bright recommended...1300 fc to 2400fc.

Temperature: Temperature: 55º to 85º F.

Feed: 100 ppm on constant feed (Excel or equivalent 15-5-15).

Potting Mix: Should have some peat for ion exchange capacity and must drain well. There should be dolomite line present for a calcium and magnesium source. Best pot size on the bench is 6". For hanging baskets use 8", or 10".

Pest Control: Prevention is the best policy. During the hot months Talstar(r) plus Orthene(r) can be used to protect against aphids, scale and caterpillars.

Container: usually grown as a large table fern or hanging basket, it can also be grown in gallon cans to be used in the landscape in temperate climate areas.

Schedule: (starting with a Santa Rosa Tropicals plug)The 8" and 10" basket times are based on starting with a 4" pot for 6 to 8 weeks depending on the season and bumping up.
6" pot - 12 to 16 weeks.
6" basket - 16 to 20 weeks.
8" basket - 12 to 18 weeks form a 4".
10 " basket - 16 to 24 weeks form a 4".
Pot all year on a regular rotation for year round sales.
