'Macho Fern'
Nephrolepis biserrata

Nephrolepis biserrata

Originally grown in Texas (obviously), this is the ideal fern for LARGE baskets. It looks fine finished as a 6" or even a gallon for growing outdoors, but keep in mind that this is the granddaddy of all the Nephrolepis baskets. If you grow it as a 10" or larger basket, plan on giving it lots of room! If it is to be a landscape fern, it can take full sun for much of the day!

Culture for best commercial production:

Light: From a low of 1250 fc to 3000+ foot candles. Can be in full sun, but begins to look yellow/green if it does not get some relief.

Temperature: Normal range should be 55º to 85º F.

Feed: 150 to 250 ppm on constant feed (15-5-15), watch that some Ca & Mg is available and that pH stays around 6. As an indoor basket, begin feeding lightly when new growth is present.

Water: Almost dry between waterings.

Pest Control: Pests are infrequent. A preventative program such as Orthene(r) plus Talstar(r) for aphids and scale is important during warm months.

Container: 10" hanging basket. Looks awesome as a 12" basket - but beware can easily grow to six feet in diameter!

Schedule: (starting with a Santa Rosa Tropicals plug)
6" starter pot planted pot to pot just until it has a good root ball but not such that the fronds are too long to handle for re-potting. Time 10 - 12 weeks.
10" basket time 12 - 18 weeks depending on the season (and the finish size desired but beware, these can take lots of room).
Best pot size for mass market = 8".
