Fern Growing Notes

'Rosy Maidenhair'
Adiantum hispidulum

Adiantum hispidulum

One of the most attractive maidenhair ferns available. 'Rosy Maidenhair' can be used as a table fern or in the landscape. The flush of amber new growth always draws attention to this fern. Easy to grow, semi-hardy (zone 9), and well worth considering as an alternative to A. pedatum for milder areas.

Culture for best commercial production:

Light: 1000 fc to 1650+ fc. No light meter? The shadow from your hand on a flat surface should be clear but the edges should be fuzzy. Sharp edges...too bright!

Temperature: 60º to 85º F. Survives temperatures above and below but growth slows or stops altogether.

Feed: 100 to 150 ppm on constant feed (15-5-15) with available Ca, Mg & pH around 6.0.

Water: more ferns are harmed by overwatering than holding back on the water. Water well then allow to almost dry before watering again. So moist, not dry and not soggy.

Potting Mix: this is often dictated by what is available locally. The key elements are low salts and excellent drainage. Some peat helps to retain fertilizer salts and keep water available to the root hairs.

Pest Control: this fern is generally quite pest free.

Container: usually grown as a table fern or as a one gallon container plant.

Schedule: (starting with a Santa Rosa Tropicals plug)
4" starter pot - 6 to 10 weeks
6" pot - 6 to 10 weeks from a 4" pot.
One gallon - 8 to 12 weeks from a 4" pot.
Pot all year on a regular rotation for year round sales.
